Elastic strap hack for the Isla sewing pattern
If you love the look of the delicate tie straps but fancy a different style that's a little more throw on and go, this hack is for you.
Today I’m sharing a simple elastic strap hack for the Isla sewing pattern that keeps the cuteness but offers an alternative which is great for kids and adds extra comfort and flexibility. This strap is actually included in the Poppy sewing pattern, but it's such an easy strap that I wanted to share it here!
Why swap tie straps for elastic?
The tie straps are super cute but they’re not always practical. You might find they get in the way if you're wearing it with layers or if kids are running around then they might slip off their shoulders. Elastic straps can be a lovely upgrade if you:
• Want a quicker sew
• Prefer a pull-on, no-adjusting fit
• Need extra flexibility for movement
• Are sewing for kids or teens
• Want a clean, minimal finish
Comfort always? Yes please!
What You’ll Need
To make the elastic strap version of Isla, you’ll need:
• The Isla sewing pattern (free ✨)
• Narrow elastic - 0.6cm (1/4")
• Your chosen fabric (lightweight woven fabrics are ideal)
• Basic sewing tools including 2 safety pins
Tip: choose soft elastic with good recovery as this makes a huge difference to longevity.
Elastic Strap Hack: Step-by-Step
This hack replaces the tie straps with elastic that’s stitched directly into the strap casing.
Step 1 - Cut your strap pieces
Cut x2 pieces (1 for each strap) using the below as a guide for the length of the straps. This length is much longer than the length of your shoulder as the elastic will gather this in.

Step 2 - Cut your elastic
As a rough guide, cut a piece of elastic that is half the length of the fabric strip. Try the elastic over your shoulder and down to your high bust point, stretching it slightly. You want it snug but not tight. You may wish to reduce the amount of elastic or increase it.
Step 3 - Sew the strap channel
Right sides together, fold the strap in half lengthways and sew with a 1cm seam allowance. Trim this seam allowance in half.

Turn the strap the right way using a rouleau loop turner or safety pin. If you're using a safety pin, attach the pin to one of the short ends and slide it through until it comes out of the other end of the strap.

4. Insert the elastic
Attach a safety pin to both ends of the elastic and thread through the strap. Secure the elastic 0.3cm (1/8”) from the raw edge at both ends with a few stitches

5. Attach to the bodice
Sew the elastic straps into the bodice seam exactly where the ties would normally go, making sure the elastic isn’t twisted.
Finish the garment following the rest of the Isla instructions.
That’s it! Comfy, flexible straps with a clean finish ✨
