Every sewing pattern designer or brand might have a different definition as to what defines sewing ability. Here's how I define sewing skill level for each sewing pattern:

Beginner
Ideal for complete beginners. These patterns use simple shapes and easy-to-sew woven fabrics like cotton or linen with no fitting required. Techniques may include straight seams, basic hems, inserting elastic, simple edge finishes like zig-zag stitch, no closures, simple square patch pockets.

Confident Beginner
For sewists who are comfortable using a sewing machine and following basic instructions. Building on your skills with techniques such as darts, gathering, applying facings or bias binding, simple sleeve styles, sewing simple closures like loops or ties, in-seam pockets, clean seam finishings with an overlocker or flat felled and french seam on straight seams, simple fitting adjustments, sewing visible centred zips, sewing curved seams and simple collars eg. peter pan. Slightly trickier fabrics can be used like viscose, light cotton lawn.

Intermediate
For those with a good understanding of garment construction. These patterns may include structured shapes, lapped or invisible zips, buttonholes, pleats, set-in sleeves, manderin or shirt collars, slant/zipped/flap pockets and linings or partial linings. You’ll start learning to adjust the fit and work with a wider range of fabrics, including lightweight or slippery materials.

Advanced
For experienced sewists confident in most garment techniques. Expect more complex construction such as fly zips, tailored collars, welt and breast pockets, fully lined or partial bagging-out, detailed seam finishing like hong kong or flat felled and french seams on curves. These patterns may require precise fitting adjustments and working with challenging fabrics or layers.

Expert
For highly skilled sewists with a deep understanding of garment construction and fitting. Techniques may include couture finishes, boning, structured tailoring, bound buttonholes, tailored jackets and coats with full structure, lined garments with bagged linings and complex pattern matching. A high level of accuracy and patience is essential.

This pattern is beyond! I have always avoided any kind of fitted bodice, but I loved the look of this pattern so had to try it. The instructions are out of this world, they cover many different aspects of fitting, very clearly. The outcome is incredible! I did the elastic back and a gathered skirt (due to fabric limitations)

Absolutely wonderful pattern. I've made 3 poppy tops, which I'm able to wear braless!!!! (40H bra size) and one stand alone Poppy skirt: all are absolutely fantastic. Next on my list is a poppy dress with sleeves!
I love this pattern so much!! I have made a couple of sets (top and skirt) and have worn them so much! The full skirt really is stunning. I also had some 110 wide fabric and just reduced the width of the skirt which worked perfectly (on the advice of the designer!) highly recommend 💜💜💜
I love how beautiful this pattern is and how many variations you can make, it makes it such good value for money! I've just made a puff sleeve top and plan to make the full dress next. The instructions were so clear and taught me so much about sewing, adjusting patterns and seam finishes, despite having just over a year of sewing under my belt. I think sewing the Poppy pattern will have now changed how I sew for life, now that I've learnt so many new techniques. Will definitely be buying more patterns following this experience!
I have made a skirt and two tops from this pattern now and have found the instructions so easy to follow and the finished garments incredibly lovely.
Lovely pattern and have liked others finished garments. Not made it up myself yet so can’t comment personally. Easy to download and print. Mine is cut out and ready to go when I have the time 😊

This is a gorgeous pattern. The instructions are really clear and the fit is fabulous. There are lots of options and so far I’ve made a top and a dress, but I will definitely be making more.
This pattern is so clearly written, it’s brilliant. I found the fitting instructions to be really useful and am so proud of myself that I used them to make a garment that really fits my body. I have already made a top and have plans to make a skirt and a dress using the pattern too. I love it!
Love this pattern it made up quite easily. Instructions are great and easy to understand. I left the gathers off the skirt and it really looks lovely. Very pleased with my purchase.

This pattern is so cute, and I’ve already made two tops with different variations. The instructions include ways to modify to fit, which is so helpful. I am really looking forward to a sew a long video!
Pattern seems incredibly comprehensive and detailed, sizing is great. I haven't made anything from it yet, but the quality of the sewing instructions is impressive.
I made the top version without the waist panel. The instructions were top notch. I had to make a few adjustments but the first mockup was so good the changes I made were minor and the instructions on how to make those changes were thorough. Highly recommend.
Love this pattern, and I think it’s about to be my go-to for every shirt and dress I make for some time, with all the mix and match options! Planning on tweaking the fit a bit before I make up the dress I bought the pattern for (and there are detailed instructions for all sorts of adjustments), but I’m already in love with the wearable muslin I started with!
